Traineeships
A traineeship is work experience that gets you ready for work or an apprenticeship. It can last from 6 weeks to a year (most last 6 months) and you can apply from 16 years old. It will offer:
- Help with getting work such as CV writing and finding a job
- A work experience placement of 70 hours or more
- Help with skills for an apprenticeship or a job
- A job interview and feedback
- Help with English, Maths and digital skills
You won't get paid on a traineeship, but you may get expenses for things like travel and meals.

Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with studying. As an apprentice you will:
- Be an employee earning a wage and getting holiday pay
- Work alongside experienced staff
- Gain job specific skills
- Get time for training and study related to your role
Apprenticeships are available at different levels and can take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on what level you do.
Some apprenticeships may also get you an additional qualification such as a diploma.
To start an apprenticeship, you need to:
- Be 16 or over
- Live in England
- Not be in full-time education
You can apply for an apprenticeship whilst you are still at school as long as you are 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays to start the apprenticeship.
